Affordable Bikes from MeCycle - Autism Initiatives

If you are looking for a low cost bike for you or a family member or for a social enterprise, such as a school or special needs group then MeCycle might be able to help. This article has been requested by many of our riders. Jon Gordon has kindly wrote it for us. Also their contact details & address is provided if you want to go along & have a look at what is available

MeCycle is a social enterprise run by Autism Initiatives, a national charity with its head office in Crosby. They receive donated bicycles and refurbish them. The renovated bikes are then sold at affordable prices to encourage family cycling as part of a healthy lifestyle, and to help people get to work. If refurbishment is not possible they are stripped down for recycling, which avoids the use of landfill sites, and any working parts are reused.

The enterprise offers supported work placements in bike maintenance and other work skills to adults who have autism and Asperger syndrome. They also have host a range of maintenance and bike training courses. All profits from these activities are invested back into the workshop to increase the numbers of placements available, to improve facilities and to broaden the range of services offered to cyclists in Sefton and Merseyside.

There are a great range of bikes now in stock, among them traditional and elegant ladies bikes, MTB’s, shoppers, road and touring bikes, trikes, BMX and child bikes. MeCycle have had plenty of success selling their bikes and have also recently benefited from generous funding from The Peoples Postcode Lottery who provided a grant enabling them to buy a nearly new van.

Jon Gordon, Enterprise Manager at Autism Initiatives, said: “We were only able to borrow a van belonging to someone else up until the People’s Postcode Lottery award, and that was only available one day a week! This has been a great boost for our development.”

They operate from a workshop in Seaforth which is an Aladdin’s Cave of used bikes and parts.  If you would like to donate a bike that you have finished using or would like to view some affordable refurbished bikes for all the family please contact Chris Bennett on 0151 928 9149 or try emailing us@mecycle.co.uk leaving your name and contact details.
